At least one person is dead and 2 others have been seriously burned following a fiery multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

The accident was reported around 1:00pm this afternoon on I-40 at mile marker 322. 

Initial reports said one or more tractor trailers were involved, but two vehicles caught fire and burned. Unfortunately one of the vehicles exploded.

One person died at the scene while two others were burned in the fiery crash and have been taken to the hospital.

Multiple emergency departments are on the scene including Johnston County Emergency Management.

I-40 has been shut down between the NC242 Exit 325 westbound near Benson and the Highway 210 Exit 319 near McGee’s Crossroads. I-40 is expected to be closed for several hours while it is investigated. 

The NC Highway Patrol, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and NC Department of Transportation are assisting with traffic control.

*One lane is now open, but very slow. 

Update: It has been confirmed that vehicle that exploded after slamming into a tractor trailer immediately catching fire; and was occupied by a woman and two boys. 

The woman and one boy was able to to make it out of the wreck, but one boy died in the fiery crash.
